Nissan Titan
The Nissan Titan is
a fullsize pickup truck produced in (and for)
the American market. The truck shares Nissan's
F-Alpha platform with the Nissan Armada and
Infiniti QX56 SUVs, and is manufactured in
Canton, Mississippi. The Titan was nominated
for the North American Truck of the Year award
for 2004.
The Titan was created
to challenge the market-leading Ford F-150,
Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra, and Dodge
Ram, as well as the lagging Toyota Tundra.
Toyota had been unable to break into the North
American fullsize truck market since its 1993
introduction of the smallish T100, and Tundra
sales since its 1999 introduction had remained
disappointing. The Tundra hovered just over
100,000 annual sales when the larger Titan
was introduced, while the Ram sold 400,000
and the Silverado/Sierra and F-Series were
at 900,000 annually. During the first full
year of production (December 2003 to December
2004), 85,920 Titans were sold, while the
Dodge Ram declined somewhat and Ford jumped
to nearly 950,000. Toyota responded to the
strong sales of the Titan with a redesigned,
and much larger, Tundra for the 2007 model
year.
